Armed police opened fire and shot an intruder inside the grounds of the Houses of Parliament today after a car skittled into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, leaving at least 12 people splayed across the ground and 40 injured. Pedestrians and cyclists were hit by the 4×4 vehicle on the bridge before the man, said to have been Asian-looking (‘ASIAN’ = MUSLIM in British speak) and in his 40s, then smashed the car into railings outside Parliament.  He jumped a gate and ran through into the front yard of the compound apparently waving a knife, before being shot by a police officer. On February 25, the Paris prosecutor launched an inquiry into Yacine Chaouat, a parliamentary assistant of the Socialist Party senator Roger Madec. Chaouat was suspected of sharing on Facebook some posts expressing "sympathy" for ISIS. "If the facts are true, they are disturbing. We're very clearly about apologizing for terrorism",  said  a source close to the investigation at the weekly  L'Express . In  Le Parisien , Chaouat  replied  he was the victim of a smear campaign. In 2015, Chaouat had to resign from a nomination to be a member of the National Secretary of the Socialist Party: some of his colleagues suggested that Chaouat was justly  condemned , because he had severely beaten his girlfriend.

Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, the politician who  previously accused  the U.S. of arming ISIS, is still calling on the U.S. government to stop its disastrous regime change policies in the Middle East. According to a  press release  made public on Tuesday, Gabbard has again called for the U.S. to stop aiding terrorists like al-Qaeda and ISIS. Gabbard’s guest at the presidential address to Congress, a Kurdish refugee activist, also called for an end to the U.S. policy of “regime change in Syria.”

A Guantanamo Bay detainee suspected of working as a bomb maker for al-Qaida, testified this summer that he was recruited into terrorism by an unnamed member of the Saudi royal family before 9/11. More than 1,300 migrants were rescued in 13 separate missions in the Mediterranean on Friday, bringing the total helped over the last three days to more than 2,600, according to the Italian coastguard. The migrants, aboard 13 different vessels, were picked up in the central Mediterranean by ships from the Italian coastguard, the Italian and British navies, merchant ships, and vessels operated by non-government organisations, a statement said. Another 1,300 migrants were rescued on Wednesday. The voyage from Libya across the Mediterranean to Italy is currently the main route to Europe for migrants. A record 181,000 made the journey last year, most on flimsy boats run by people smugglers. More than 5,000 people are believed to have died attempting the crossing in 2016. In the latest in a series of measures pushed by the European Union to stop migrants reaching Europe, Italy launched a new fund on Wednesday to help African countries control their own borders.
